Those wooden window shutters were once the coolest accessory that a house can have. But they were very high-maintenance and required close attention in order to keep them looking good and operating properly. These vinyl shutters are basically hassle-free as you do not need to repaint, repair or upgrade them as much as those old wooden types. There is almost no weight to the shutters yet they look like the traditional heavy wood shutters. The composite shutter has the lowest cost among all the options. They are called composite because they are made from a combination of different materials designed to go together in order to come up with a better material which would be resilient against the elements. They are made of particleboard that is pressed into molds so that you can choose from raised panel, louvered, batten and board styles. They come with a hinge and opens or closes much like the traditional wooden shutters.

A very popular choice despite being a little bit more expensive is the fiberglass window shutter. Same with the vinyl shutters, they are made from almost the same molds hence they have identical designs. They do last around twenty years so they make a good investment. Fiberglass is a much stronger product than the particleboard version. If you live in an area which is frequently visited by typhoons and hurricanes, the fiberglass shutters would be an excellent choice as they are proven to stand against the fiercest weather. These are available in many textures and colors or you can also purchase them ready to paint to customize for your home.

The aluminum shutters however, may be the most adaptable among all the choices. These do come in a huge array of colors, textures and all the various styles including the faux colonial louvered shutter. Even though they are so popular, they do come with a rather short warranty of only three years. They just do not hold up against severe weather conditions. They are made to look like the real thing, wood, but they have a finish that just does not hold up to the comparison.

The old-school wooden shutters are still widely available though if you prefer to have them for your windows. Just remember that they are high-maintenance, doesn’t stand up too well against the elements, and weather-proofing them is very expensive.
